Grandparents, you may be surprised at where your pride and joy is spending his or her time.  More and more, from ages 9 to 14, they may be spending their time with their teachers and parents building robots.  Robotry has become one of the leading go-to educational tools to enhance the learning skills of our youth.

This year, more than 233,000 children from over 80 countries will explore the fascinating world of “trash” as a meaningful exercise to make their world a better place in which to live.  For them, the task is to create a Lego robot that will solve a trash problem, whether it be collection, clean-up, reuse, or storage.  They work as teams, identifying the problem, designing the solution, sharing their problems and solutions with others, and then competing in the internationally created contest to demonstrate their expertise.  They are given five minutes to set up and demonstrate their presentation, utilizing no adult help and scored on a point system on their successes and failures solving the problem.  Competitions start at the local level and then graduate to statewide and ultimately the world levels.

Participation requires adherence to the core values of teamwork, working with coaches and mentors, learning together, honoring the spirit of friendly competition, sharing their experiences with others, having fun, displaying Gracious Professionalism and Competition and recognizing that what they discover is more important than winning.

Are your grandchildren involved in this meaningful exercise or one like it?
